Lesson 4: Who Calls the Apostle?

Apostle Colette Toach

Lecturer: Apostle Colette Toach

Based on the Apostolic Handbook book by Apostle Colette Toach

Introduction:

A man goes up to the front of the church in response to an altar call. Standing before a group of prophets, the word comes... "I have called you to be an apostle." Wow, what a surprise! What a shock! I never thought of doing ministry before. So I am an apostle now. I wonder what that means? I guess it means that I should start a church or something...

This is NOT an example of how the Lord calls His apostles. Just like Moses, the call comes in the desert, as you are going about your normal business. It comes suddenly and it comes from the Lord directly. Perhaps you are like Apostle Paul going along his merry way and suddenly struck to the ground! When you get such a clear word from the Lord, there is no denying that you are called. The Lord is gracious and does not leave it there. He will always confirm. For Moses, Aaron was sent to him and he got some signs and wonders. Paul had Ananias to help him out and give him that prophetic word.

And so the Lord WILL use others to confirm your calling, but it will come to you directly from the Lord first. It might be, though, that you do not even identify that you have an apostolic call. When the Lord Jesus called Apostle Paul, he did not say, "Paul, I call you to be an apostle and a herald and a teacher, and you will have 3 years of training..." No, the Lord said to him that he was calling him to be a minister and a witness to the Gentiles, to open their eyes, to teach them forgiveness of sins and to turn them from darkness to light.

How would Paul know that in years to come that he would write half of our New Testament? Yet, one thing was sure, the Lord called him and he was given a mandate. How he would fulfill that only made sense years later.

So is it with you. Until you receive that direct call from the Lord, you do not have a starting point. In The Staff of Moses, you will read how Moses had no idea what he was really going to do. He thought he was just going to set the Israelites free, little did he know that the Lord was going to give him the entire pattern for the tabernacle and the law!

This is why you must know for yourself when you were called and that the call came to you from the Lord Jesus.

Chapter 3 - Identifying Your Apostolic Calling

Sign 3: Called by Jesus (Personal Encounter With Jesus. Miraculous Call)

Acts 26:15 So I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

16 But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you.

17 I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you,

18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’

If you have had a personal encounter with the Lord Jesus and received your calling from Him directly, then you can identify with this sign. There have been many occasions where I have seen the Lord Jesus, but one occasion really stands out to me as the day He called me to be an apostle.

I had been going through a lot of change and I had been struggling with many issues that the Lord had revealed in my life. It seemed to me that the whole world was against me and that I was the greatest failure of them all!

I was standing in my bedroom and cried out to the Lord with all that I had. I cried out, “Lord, what do you want from me?” In that instant, I felt as Paul must have when he was struck to the ground. I was brought to the ground by the Holy Spirit as His presence came over me.

At that moment, I was in the throne room of God. I heard the Lord say to me very clearly, “Go heal my people.” After a moment more, I heard Him speak again, “Go feed my people.” And again, “Go set my people free.”

I knew that God had spoken and like Paul I trembled, wondering how I could have been called for this purpose. The Lord Jesus then spoke many other personal things to me during that time and when He had finished, I felt Him place His hand upon my shoulder and tell me to stand. I stood up knowing that God had called me.

I stood up knowing that I was called to be an apostle and I stood up knowing my purpose and place in the Kingdom of God. It is that calling that has remained as gold through the many fires I have faced since and it will remain my foundation until I have completed every mandate that God has given me. Then I will pass that foundation on to the next generation.

If Paul had not received that miraculous call on the way to Damascus, he would not ever have known who he was. Before that time, he really thought that He was doing the work of the Lord. Before that he felt that he was being the best Jew that he could be.

How misdirected he was! He was correct in knowing that he was called, but not until his conversation did he know his place and purpose.

So you too need such a call before your apostolic training can begin. This call might, in fact, usher you directly into apostolic training. This goes way beyond an inner conviction. This is a miraculous and personal call directly from the Lord Jesus. Such a personal encounter will change your life and such a calling will set you firmly toward the goal of apostolic office.

Personal Project:

Considering what you learned in this lesson, answer these questions:

1. When did you receive a clear call from the Lord Jesus to establish his Kingdom? Write down what the Lord said and how you know it was an apostolic call.

2. Was this call confirmed by others. A prophet perhaps? Write down what was said.

Perhaps you are sure that the Lord has called you and you feel a bit like Apostle Paul at the beginning. Blind, unsure, and not knowing the next step to take. It could be that the Lord has called you to be a Moses Apostle.

If you function in a teaching ministry and God has often promised you that you will lead His people to the promised land, then I highly recommend you get The Staff of Moses, because it is vital to the next step that you will take.

Lesson 4: Prophets and Apostles - Making it Work

It is for the apostle to have the structure and pattern to create an environment for the prophets to flourish. Learn to identify your place and be able to recognize which ones in your team need more training and which ones are your “Timothys” that you can pour into. See the difference between ministry and leadership and how to work together with your prophets to build the foundation the Lord has called you to build.
