Lesson 2: Apostolic Symbols

Apostle Colette Toach

Lecturer: Apostle Colette Toach

Based on the Apostolic Handbook book by Apostle Colette Toach

Introduction:

Imagine having a bunch of keys placed in your hands with a treasure chest and being told to find the right key. At first it can be exciting, but after some time, you could get frustrated if you do not find the correct one.

When you start digging through various teachings on the apostolic calling, it really feels like you have been given a big bunch of keys. What fits where? Which one is the key to the apostolic calling? My father saw various symbols in the spirit for someone called to the apostolic ministry. One of those symbols was something he saw when he released me into my apostolic training.

I think I was way too naive at the time and did not have a clue what waited for me for the next three years. As we were in prayer, as a group, my father saw a jewel-encrusted key and felt led by the Lord to give it to me. Only later as we got further revelation in the Word, did we know what that key was! It was the apostolic key and he had released me fully into apostolic training. When we discovered this revelation, the sudden upheaval and changes in my life made sense!

The apostolic key is just one of the symbols that you could see in the spirit relating to the apostolic call. Perhaps as you came to the Lord in prayer you saw Him give something to you in the spirit. It could well be, that the Lord was indicating that you have an apostolic call. However, just knowing this little truth brings the same relief as it did for me when after ages of searching, I found the right key.

Study Notes

Crown

Receiving a crown speaks of being given a position of honor and favor. To have run the race faithfully and won.

Positive: To gain a position of honor
Negative:

  • Loss of your authority and position
  • To take, but force, a position of honor that is not yours

Positive

Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.

Here is the definition for Crown in the Strong's Concordance:

4735 stephanos {stef'-an-os}

AV - crown 18; 18

1) a crown
1a) a mark of royal or (in general) exalted rank
1a1) the wreath or garland which was given as a prize to victors in public games
1b) metaph. the eternal blessedness which will be given as a prize to the genuine servants of God and Christ: the crown (wreath) which is the reward of the righteousness
1c) that which is an ornament and honor to one

If you see the Lord giving you a crown in the spirit, it speaks of being given honor and also authority. Often when we have appointed apostles to apostolic office we have seen the Lord given them a golden crown along with a scepter and a new robe.

Wreath or garland: To receive a laurel wreath or garland indicates that you have run a good race and have won it and received your prize. It means that the Lord is going to honor and reward you for being so faithful.

James 1:12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

1 Corinthians 9:25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.

In the spirit, I have also seen the crown of David which is a picture of the Davidic apostle.

Negative

To dream of losing your crown or having it stolen speaks of letting go of the authority that God has given to you.

Revelation 3:11 Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.

To be the one who steals the crown speaks of usurping someone else’s position and trying to steal their honor for yourself.

Mountain

A mountain in any context speaks of a new journey and obtaining new heights. It can also be an obstacle in your way that you need to conquer.

Positive: An opportunity for promotion
Negative: An obstacle from the enemy

Character Specific Symbol

Positive

If you are someone that enjoys mountain climbing, then your dream would speak of your hobbies and interests.

However, for most people, a mountain will speak of a new goal or level for you to attain. It is a promise of a promotion and seeing a new perspective on things.

Negative

A mountain in a negative light speaks of an obstacle that is preventing you from reaching your personal goals.

It could be that you are struggling to complete a project or go in a certain direction. Dreaming of a mountain in your road is a confirmation of the blockage.

You will need wisdom to discern if this is a mountain you must tackle or one you need to walk around and avoid.

Of course, as believers, when the enemy puts a mountain in our way, we have the authority to pluck it up and cast it into the sea!

Universal Symbol

Positive

For both visions and prophetic dreams, the mountain is a very positive picture! It speaks of an opportunity for you to receive a promotion in the realm of the spirit.

However, it is not going to come without effort. Climbing a mountain is hard work and it will require a lot from you.

It will mean leaving some things behind that you have relied on before. It will mean leaving behind everything you were and possessed so that you can take hold of the new thing.

In The Staff of Moses, I share how the Moses apostle is called to the mountaintop many times. It is here that He will come into that face-to-face relationship with Jesus and also get his mandate.

A mountain in the Scriptures is often a picture of the presence of God. It is an apt image as it comes with a price. It means leaving behind your own ideas and everything that weighs you down, to come into His presence.

Moses had to obey some strict conditions before climbing the mountain into the Lord's presence. However, the journey was worth it, because there he experienced the glory of God!

Have you been asking the Lord to experience Him in a greater way? If so, then seeing a mountain is a call from the Lord to take the first step; to submit to going through the death and letting go of the old, so that you can take on the new.

Just like in real life, it will be a hard climb. However just as Moses discovered, it will be well worth it when you get to experience God in a new and powerful way.

Exodus 24:17 The sight of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.

Negative

When praying for someone or for personal needs, I have often seen a mountain in my path.

This is a negative picture and speaks of an obstacle that the enemy has put there.

It is also a good picture of how you feel when you come to the Lord with a big prayer request. It seems to loom over you, making you feel small and insignificant.

However, you can overcome it! If you see a mountain across your path and you feel that it is something that the enemy has put there, then it is something for you to remove in the name of Jesus.

This is a call to spiritual warfare. I suggest that you get your hands on the Strategies of War book for some very practical teaching on this subject.

Mark 11:23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, be removed and be cast into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.

If you are facing a mountain in your life right now, take this passage, memorize and confess it until it is deep in your spirit. Then stand against that mountain and it will give way!

Rod

A position of authority. A tool used for correction.

Positive: The confirmation that you are under God’s protection
Negative: To be cast down and beaten into submission against your will

Universal Symbol

Positive

A rod or staff can be compared to the kingly scepter.

It was Aaron's rod that budded, confirming his call as the first High Priest of Israel. It was Moses who also used his staff to perform the many miracles that took place.

When we have released someone into apostolic training, we often see the rod of Moses. This is showing that this person will function in an apostolic capacity.

To see the staff of the enemy being broken is also good. It means that their authority over you and their strength has been taken away.

Isaiah 14:5 The Lord has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers.

Shepherd's staff: The shepherd also carried a staff to direct the sheep or to lift one up that might have fallen. It is a lovely picture of the ministry of the pastor.

Negative

As an Apostle, Paul had the authority to bring correction to the churches that were in his care. Seeing a rod in this context speaks needing to either bring or receive correction.

1 Corinthians 4:21 What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?

That being said, if you feel that you are being “beaten” in your dream and vision and it feels negative, it could well speak of someone else trying to impose their ideas on you, causing you to submit to their will. They are using principles and the guise of it being “moral” or “from the Lord”, but they are in fact asserting their own human will over you, causing you to come under their control and not the Lord’s

Determine if the “submission” in your vision or dream is positive (as in the case of Apostle Paul) where God is telling you to give up your own ideas, or if it is negative and someone is imposing their will on you.

Personal Project:

  1. Can you remember the Lord giving you anything in the spirit relating to your calling?
  2. Perhaps someone else spoke a word over you. Can you recall if they saw any specific symbols?

Lesson 2: Apostolic Ministry and Marriage

As the requirement for being a deacon in the Word is to be beyond reproach, for an apostle it is doubly so. Marriage is one of the Lord's greatest gifts and is a powerful weapon against the enemy when a husband and wife stand together in unity. Discover and embrace the process the Lord will inevitably take you through to set in you a sure foundation in every aspect of your marriage to ensure your success in your apostolic journey.
